Rem Sleep Disorder Some people may think that loud snoring is just an embarrassing and annoying habit but the deprivation of shut eye that it causes is actually quite serious. Chronic sleep deprivation has been linked to many worrying health concerns, including: high blood pressure, heart disease and stroke, depression, diabetes, obesity, premature aging and a general lack of energy and enthusiasm for life.

If you are a chronic snorer, it is likely that you are also experiencing what is known as REM sleep disorder. Normal sleep patterns consist of two distinct types: non-rapid eye movement (also called NREM) and rapid eye movement (also called REM). During rapid eye movement, sleep lightens and your breathing becomes irregular, blood pressure rises, paralysis (loss of muscle tone) occurs and you often begin to dream vividly.

For anyone with REM sleep behavior disorder (also called RBD), however, the paralysis that normally occurs is either incomplete or altogether absent. The absence of this paralysis can cause a person to actually physically act out their dreams while they are sleeping. Such physical behaviors often include talking, yelling, leaping, punching, kicking, sitting up, jumping out of bed, arm flailing and even grabbing.

Sometimes the person will awaken during an attack and other times they will remain asleep while acting out these physical behaviors. These dream-enacting behaviors, however, should be taken seriously because they can not only lead to serious health problems but the sufferer can also become violent, often causing injury either to oneself or to a sleeping partner.

The good news is that some of these REM sleep disorder problems can be helped by simply addressing a person's daily consumption of foods and drinks and their lifestyle choices. Choosing the correct foods and drinks to either consume or avoid can significant influence whether the person has a restful night's sleep, which also means having a snore-free night as well.

Dr. Rick Donald, a well known nutritionist from Melbourne, Australia has done significant research in this area and addresses many of these concerns about stopping snoring as well as REM sleep disorder treatment options in his clinically proven and tested program Essential Stop Snoring Secrets. There are also some great tips that you can find out about on his website at www.stopmysnoringnow.com.

Dr. Rick Donald has authored seven books and countless articles, in addition to treating thousands of patients over the past fifteen years. By following his program, you will not only be able to finally put an end to that annoying snoring habit, but you will benefit from a restful night's sleep each night and improve your overall health and wellness at the same time.
