Sleep Problems Sleep problems in kids are common and can encompass many different disorders including sleepwalking, bedwetting, insomnia, nightmares and sleep apnea. Any of these can cause your child to suffer from sleep deprivation, which can have a serious negative impact on their mental and physical development as they mature.

All sleep problems in kids need to be addressed because they can be associated with the development of later debilitating health issues, including obesity, diabetes, cardio-vascular concerns, delayed development, emotional disorders, irritability and learning or cognitive difficulties. And this is apart from the fact that they will be constantly tired.

For some children sleep problems accompanied by loud snoring can be a sign that they may be suffering from the serious health condition Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). If you are concerned that your child might suffer from OSA, you should consult with your doctor because if not treated it can actually lead to compromised health issues later in life, especially high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke and even an early death. But the good news is that sleep apnea problems in kids often disappear as your child ages.

Other sleeping disorders are less serious and do not usually require medical treatment. The frequency of the problem is a good indicator of how significant the disorder may be. Certainly, if the disturbance occurs more than several times a week, you should also consult with your physician.

As a parent, there are some simple steps that you can take to immediately help your child's sleeping disorder. Importantly, begin by carefully monitoring their daily food and drink intake. They should avoid food and drink that contains 'artificial anything' and all caffeine, especially sodas and chocolate. These stimulants can make sleeping difficult.

Your child also should stay clear of milk and carbohydrates such as potatoes, dried fruits and some cereals and grains before going to sleep. And they need to avoid any food and drink that can clog or irritate their sinuses or overly relax their respiratory structures at the back of the throat.

Lifestyle and environmental issues also need to be taken into account as these can have a positive or negative influence on your child's sleep and on whether they snore or not. So it is important to be aware of such things as the quality and temperature of the air that your child is breathing, their comfort, light and noise and even their mental state before bedtime.
